Submission Guidelines for JKFiles.com
Last Updated 30 October 2008
Contents
Want to submit a file? Follow this checklist!
: If you submit a file with borrowed material you must ADEQUATELY CREDIT the author of said material as well as provide the READ-ME from the original file. No exceptions!
JKFiles has instituted a new policy on duel music mods. Please see this announcement or check our plagiarism policy for details.
Add streaming video to your mod review! See this news annoucement for more information!
- Make sure you zip your file! We prefer zip files, as they are more universal. RAR files will be accepted, but your file may not be uploaded as quickly as possible if a staff member can not easily open RAR files.
- Make sure your file works properly. We can not stress the importance of beta testing your file. Beta test it thoroughly - we will try to test as many files as we can, and if we find an error we'll let the community know and that may hurt your downloads.
- Always put your
name (this is what you wish to be called - include your FilesNetwork name if it's different) and your
e-mail in the body of your read-me. This makes it much easier for us to reach you if we need to, so we don't have to go searching
around for your e-mail address or your name. If we can't figure out who you are, we'll have to reject your file.
- If you want to help us out, include which mod category you think your file should go in.
- Only submit files you have made. If you want to submit a file for a friend... don't. They can do it
themselves. This also applies to compilation packs. Do not submit a compilation pack of other authors' work (or, conversely, pull a piece of a mod out and submit it individually). Original mod authors can (and would) do this if they feel so moved.
- Along with the above, if you are creating some kind of small modification to an author's work, please include the least amount of material necessary. It is somewhat rude to, for instance, change a model's eye color and resubmit the entire skin and call it your own. Remember to be courteous to other authors -- if you can make slight modifications in your own PK3 and have the downloaders download the original material in tandem, this is more appropriate than including a lot of unaltered material.
- You must include your own screenshots with your file. We will no longer take screenshots for you. Files without screenshots will perform very poorly and will lack popularity, and will result in your file not being downloaded as much. Please take the time to take screenshots of your file and submit them in
JPG format only, must be less than 400kb, and must be at least
200 pixels (width) by 150 pixels (height) in size. Any screenshots not following these regulations
will be ignored and will result in your mod being posted without screenshots.
- You must include a read-me with your file or it will be rejected. Absolutely no exceptions. This means that even non-modifications, such as videos, require a read-me as well. Here is an example of a simple read-me format:

WEBSITE: http://www.mywebsite.com

CREDITS**: I would give credits to anyone whose work I used or borrowed, including graphics and models (or any type of voice acting or in-game acting, for videos).
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS**: I would explain how to install your mod here. Believe it or not, there are still people out there who have not the slightest clue how to install PK3s.

Some Helpful Hints
- If the filesize of your file is
ABOVE 250 megabytes you will need to upload the file elsewhere, we recommend
using FileFront's free unlimited hosting
to get it to us. Once you're done uploading please supply us
with the URL of the file by clicking
hereee
- Don't include screenshots in your zip file. It slows downloads down, especially for our users with slower modems,
you will find a screenshot upload area during the submission process.
- When you are creating your zip file, don't use spaces or strange characters. Our FTP system will remove these symbols, so there is no point in using them. Instead of spaces, use underscores.
- You do not need to include the _humanoid folder with your skin unless you have changed any animations. This will just add needless space to your PK3 and will be taken out by the reviewers anyway, thus making them cranky when it comes time to write the review for your skin. Do everyone a favor and don't add it unless it's needed. There's no sense in making a 100kb skin take up 9mb.
- Need help improving your work? Visit the forums. The Site Administrator spends a lot of time there, and there are always people willing to help you. Just make sure you search the forums (using the Search this Forum tool) before you ask a question, in case it has already been answered.
- If you are including screenshots with your file, make sure they are an appropriate size. 640x480, 800x600, or any multiples of those dimensions are ideal. Our file system will resize the thumbnail, so oddly-sized screenshots may be distorted. A badly distorted thumbnail could keep some people from viewing or downloading your file.
- DO NOT submit your file more than once, unless you have an updated version or you have been told to do so by staff. If you submit a new copy of your file, the old copy will be deleted and you will have to wait in line for the new file to be uploaded. Also, if you expect frequent updates (more than once per day) please wait until you update your file to submit it. We hate nothing more than uploading a file, and 5 minutes later receiving an updated version.
- We will absolutely not accept any modification or material that is stolen. Please give the appropriate credit to all whose work you use or borrow. If you plagiarize, your file will be rejected. View our Plagiarism and Crediting Policy for more information.
