Yavin Retreat v2 - File Description

Here we have a good old fashioned Yavin Academy themed map, which includes several different rooms for dueling or training in. Firstly, there is the mail hall, off of which branches a room with various elevated pads, presumably for jump training and the such, and a room with a raised glass platform for dueling also, à la the Yavin Academy map from JK2 single player. There is a small observation platform in the main hall from which you can watch duels in this room, although it could probably do with being enlarged a little so you can better see the action!

The focal point however is probably the garden area with the waterfall and river, providing a nice open space to relax or gather in. This area does need some improvement though, mainly as with regards to the terrain, which is made out of various patch meshes. Patch meshes aren't really the best things to make terrain out of, except under special circumstances. I would suggest, for this map, trying some quadsoup, or trisoup terrain. What this is, is basically lots of square (or triangular brushes, e.g. a square cut diagonally across) which you then select and use the vertex tool (the V key by default in Radiant) and adjust the height of the corners to create terrain. This is worth a go in this area of the map, as I think it would help it to look much more natural.

There is also some very nice, and relaxing KotOR music featured in the map, which although it is from KotOR, fits perfectly with the Yavin Academy theme of the map.

Keep up the good work MagSul, I look forward to seeing more maps from you! smile

TITLE: Yavin_Retreat_V2
E-MAIL: nivek_tholmai@hotmail.co.uk

FILENAME: Yavin_Retreat_V2
DATE RELEASED: 26 July 2010

CREDITS: I would like to give credits to Jeremy Soule for the background music used in the map as well as the various free texture gallerys that I came across that supplied some of the custom textures.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Open 'My Computer' and open your C:/ drive. From there, open your program files folder and navigate to 'Lucasarts'. Continue through the folder structure until you find 'Base'. Place the pk3 in the 'Base' folder. To load the map once in game, open up the console by tapping SHIFT and ` together. From there type: "/devmap yavin_retreat_v2" Alternatively you can navigate through the menu to Play > Solo Game > Yavin Retreat.

DESCRIPTION: This file is a map that is mostly built with a theme resembling Yavin IV. The map is fairly small and consists of four connected areas for people to duel. The first of these rooms contains a series of pillars that can be raised or lowered at the players discretion by using the Force powers Push and Pull. The second room is fairly empty and is a hybrid of a typical dojo and Bespin, due to the textures put in place to make it, this room is also the center of the map and contains the HP and shields. The third room contains a raised platform to duel on with a gap in the center. The last of the areas is set outside, by a bridge, stream and waterfall. There is also a small place appropriate for those not duelling to sit about.

BUGS: To my knowledge there are no bugs. But I would appreciate it if anyone came across any, they could let me know.

PERMISSIONS: If you really want to take this map apart for anything I can't and wouldn't try to stop you. I'd be quite flattered if someone wanted to take my work to use. I would appreciate a reference in the credits though please if you do.

Very nice indeed. Like the look of your dojo-type room.

Thanks MUG806, it's much appreciated! I'll give the alternate terrain a go to, Nozyspy.

You have a nice map here! It looks like you have a firm grasp on layout and architecture (I like the shape of the corridor in screenie #2, and the way you *slightly* indented the wall around the door in screenie #5--nice subtle detail). The feel of the map is also quite good--I *love* the open, brightly lit atmosphere of the arena in screenie #3. (Congratulations--you made the tired old Yavin skybox actually look good!)

A few suggestions for improvement...in the corridor, the lights sort of *halfway* have a source. The sources are there, but they don't look like they actually give off light. Maybe you should make them brighter or put a fire effect on top? Also, tweak the lighting a bit to give it a bit more depth. Bright sunlight is good, but make sure not to make it look like a meta compile. (That's sort of how the last screenie looks).

Keep on mapping!

Sorry for the double-post, but I just caught something in your read-me and saw in in the screenie--you mixed the yavin and bespin themes. So THAT'S why I like that room so much! You mixed the two themes very nicely. It makes it look luxurious (like a "Retreat" of sorts...!) and adds some very tasteful detail.

@Jedi_Mediator. Firstly, thank you for your feedback! I confess lighting is something I'm still inexperienced with and I'll work on it. Time and practise is all it takes on my part, so I should get better with it by my next map. The comment about the corridor is noted, I'll experiment with some torches or alternate forms of lighting. I'm glad you liked the Bespin/Yavin combination.

Chances are there will be a Version 3.0 one day. For now though, I'll see about mapping in another direction and do something different for a while.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Two Thumbs Up!

What do you feel I could fill it up with, Darth Nugget? An NPC room or any suggestions?
