Trade Federation Droid Control Ship - File Description

Quality: 7

Size vs. Usefulness: 9

Overall Rating: 7.5

Description:
Map rating: * * * (out of four) — 7/10

New Textures: Yes
New Sounds: Yes
Bot Support: Yes

I'm happy to say that this is my first map review where I get to recommend the map! Three stars out of four (also 7/10) and above means that I recommend it; anything below means that it's just another file in the database, from my point of view. CommanderKEEN's well-constructed Trade Federation Droid Control Ship recreates the essential scenes from the opening sequences of "Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace." Rooms include the docking bay where Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn land, the gassy Conference Room in which they sit for the "short" negotiations, the corridors where they fought battle droids, the bridge where the nemoidians schemed, and something of the author's imagination—a dock control station.

Before I get to what I like, I'll tell you the thing that was missing: a good, solid framerate. I can't bring up it's score even though the low framerate is excusable: all big maps like this are bound by the laws of the engine to have low framerate in order for everything to be the way that it's supposed to be, unless you use some handy mapping tricks. Also, the lighting/shadowing was explained by the author to be bad due to his lowly PC (he hopes to upgrade). He's mostly right, but I tend to be really leniant about lighting and shadowing and that whole league of mapping perfection, unless it's so obvious that anyone will notice or care.

The first thing that I noticed when I entered the map was the music, which was fittingly exciting for this map. I spawned in the conference room, where I saw cups near the end chairs of the table, out of which Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn drank during their treasonously short negotiations. I also liked the blockade scene outside windows. Exploring the map, I found that textures (credited to Breath and Leaving Dead Jedi) consistently worked for where they were—except maybe the dock control station, where at least the floor had some blocky, repetitive textures—the elevators had no problems, and the doors opened with a seemingly familiar sound that I hadn't before heard used for opening doors (I liked it, obviously).

The rooms were all thoroughly detailed to look the way that they should, and I just happen to like dock control stations (there's something fun about looking down on things from a heightened point of view, even in games). The docking bay should be a great place for dueling and other fun activities, but maps like this are usually reserved for the role-player. It might not be as delightfully feature-rich as some other role-play maps, but imagination tends to make them more fun anyway.

I really enjoyed exploring this map—even if the framerate needed improvement—it's a well-tried and mostly successful effort to recreate those Star Wars moments. I actually thought that it was just the right size for what it is—but if the author wants to make it bigger when he gets a better computer (good luck!), I am in full support.

Description/File Info:

This is Trade Federation Droid Control Ship from Episode I. From the things that are seen in the movie, there are Conference Room, Bridge and Docking Bay, including Republic Cruiser docked (unfortunatly, still with no interior, but i hope to make it for the next version), all conected with corridors, and something of my own imagination - a dock control station.

Comments:

Due to the winkness of my PC, i was unable to make this map larger and more complex. My PC was having troubles to handle even this sized map. I was forced to make the map in several different parts, that are later merged in the final map (and that is so boring). And, what is more important, I was unable to do the full Light process, and because of that, the map does't look like as it should and some lights and shadows looks pretty ugly. So, don't expect next versions of the map, untill I upgrade my PC (do not expect it for a long time  )
Also, Republic Cruiser prefab is included in this file, so please put in the prefab section.

First of all, I have to thank Breath for his awesome textures (he made the first version of Trade Federation ship for Jedi Outcast), Leaving Dead Jedi (for his textures), Earendil the Mariner for his proffesional Photoshop support (this guy is an artist), www.gamingforums.com for help and assistance, www.jk3files.com and all other sites for releasing this map and offcourse the whole www.at-at.org community for support!

I learn by mistakes. I forgot to deny this file entry due to the fact that it didn't include original readmes of the authors of the textures—but this never occurred to me, because it seems worded as if he talked to all of these people (thus getting permission). If he was honorable enough to get support from real people who know how to give it, then he was hopefully honorable enough to talk to those original authors. smile

It wasn't clear which textures he used, so it might be hard to find those readmes....

NEVERTHELESS, this does not excuse me: Sorry for my failure to comply. The author shouldn't be punished for my mistake though; I think this file should stay (I wouldn't say so if it were any lesser a map).

(The only reason that I am making this comment is to enforce into my brain the fact that I MUST nag for original readmes. Speculators who wish to constructively criticize the map should ignore this post. smile)

I use a policy some of my professors use: our mistake is our mistake. However make sure the author is aware of our policy for the future.

The map looks pretty neat, but I can really only judge aesthetics. stick out tongue

This map Rock ! The only three things that bugged me were the lack of opening doors (5 or 6 total), the underside of the ship being grey (it accually had the same coloration as the rest of the ship, in the movie), and the inability to enter the ship (I would suggest using the "Star Wars Episode I Incredible Cross-Sections" book to get the interior). However, those are just minor things, and th map is awesome nonetheless. Two Thumbs Up! 9/10

My computer ain't the greatest hunk of junk in the world. I took those screenshots with low settings (thank you Mr. KEEN for pointing that out to me; I will use medium from now on), and as a result, the author told me how awful the map looks on my computer.

He provided to me this link which contains dramatically better shots of the map when it wasn't even entirely finished:

One thing I forgot to mention is that this map may be considered as BETA verison, 'cause I wasn't able to import all the things I wanted, due to the wikness of my PC, as I explained before.
As soon as I get better machine to work on, I'll make this map more interesting - larger, interactive, with Republic Cruiser interior, etc.
Anyway, thanks everyone for respond.
All your criticism and suggestions are more then welcome and I'll do everything to make this map better and more interesting, so please tell me all the things you'd like to see in the next version.

To Darth Ajax: the underside of the ship is also textured with the same red color as the rest of the ship. It's grey because there are no light entites under the ship, and only the enviroment shine is visible.
Also, where can I find that book? A there some pictures online?

Oh. Well, I guess that explains that. And as for the book, I found a copy at Barnes & Noble. The great thing about that series (each movie has a seperate book) is that is shows some of the interiors of all the ships, and the inner workings. There will probably be some guess-work involved in it's creation, but it still shows about half of the ships. Hope this helps!
