NT Bespin - File Description

Description:
Do you want more proof that Bespin was the most popular map for the JK series? Well, here ya go. Another map based on the often-played Bespin Streets. So I explored the map and was thinking, not only is this really familiar, it doesn't feel that different. There are some new lights here and there, and there are a few areas that have been expanded. Also, I noticed that everything seems a bit smaller in scale. But in some places, things are more spread out. Much more friendly to short people. big grin Anyway, I didn't think there were any new additions to the map except the giant Rodian statue - until I decided to check out that one area where the thermal dets are tucked away. And I found that this spot had been expanded. I walked around the corner and found an elevator up a tower. At the top is a Repeater - which is a good thing, because it totally wasn't in the spot it was supposed to be. Now you have a great place for sniping up here. And not just from this tower. There's another Repeater on a little tower to the side. At the very top of the center building, you'll find a pool has been added.

Overall impression of this map is that it's Bespin, but a bit better. Then again, there are a few things that are missing that I'd want back - like the Flechette! I didn't see it anywhere. Anyway, it's nice to see people customizing things the way they want them. smile

 #4 - What a ***** reveiw - Posted by: Placid (Member) on 03-02-2005 at 05:04
Thanks for the comments.

Review could of been a bit more detailed though. How about mentioning that there are no more invisible walls except the raised area in the backstreets.

Also there is a button-activated pit in the center of the street you forgot to mention along with a secret room with a television, couch, and bed in it.

As for gun placements, I didn't focus on them enough, and this isnt a final version.

Thanks none the less.

#5 - Review Missed Most of the Features! - Posted by: JetstreamServers (Member) on 03-14-2005 at 21:18
Hi Amy and Co.

Nice review but you missed over 90% of the map's features it seems to me. I like the fact that on the outside it looks like the original ffa_Bespin and all of the changes are subtle but it does have a lot of extras that you need to explore a bit to discover. Here is a potted summary of the features I'm aware of that your review neglected to mention;-

1) Coke machine: Rodians cry in JK2 sounds like "I wanna coke" and the Rodian statue should be a big cue that this map is pro Rodian and this is because PaddyOne/Spinal/Placid plays JK2 a a Rodian so I guess he's entitled to that. smile Anyhow, vending machine contains a trap. Just press the use key around it, get the hang of how it works and lure your friends along to their destruction. There are places to stand to operate the trap where you won't get hurt.

2) Control panel in main street lowers part of the main street floor to an underground area where you can more easily kick/push/pull/grip people to their doom. :>

3) Swimming pool on the roof (nicely out of the way) with underground bacta. Now clans can have their pool parties!

4) Hidden room (go look for it) containing a working television (stay and read the amusing adverts) and couch, etc. This was kindly done for -[NT]-Rob, one of NT's members who has pretty severe health problems so that was a nice touch by Spinal.

5) You can now jump to the three towers area (they also have a sniper rifle to counteract the sniper rifle in the tower with the elevator).

6) Hidden ammo and health on top of other sniper towers (trap doors.)

7) You can now jump beneath the dueling platform. In the 1.0 version, Spinal had an excellent area down there that was basically the trash compactor facility merged into Bespin. He took it out temporarily for this release while he was working on it but I can't wait to see it come back!

8) A couple of posters on the walls here and there including a fun "WANTED" anti-laming poster.

Bottom line for me is that Spinal mirrored the look of Bespin (although this is 100% coded from scratch and not an adaption of existing Bespin map) so everyone will be familiar with basic layout yet he made it subtly larger space-wise so we can cope with 32 players now and he also added some simple fun features (got to love dueling under water.) NT and others have developed a number of maps and I'm not necessarily pro all of them but this one I have found to be highly playable which is why we've been supporting it since v1.0. Spinal clearly concentrated completely on playability rather than trying to make everything new. He kept what worked and what made Bespin stay the #1 map and just twisted it subtly here and there to really add what a crowd on a busy server would like. I do recommend getting a bunch of people in and lowering the main street platform and seeing how FFAs end up. A good example of a subtle difference.

Cheers,
Neil.

I was about to write a big review but others have already mentioned most of it.
However, the comment "Also, I noticed that everything seems a bit smaller in scale."-AmosMagee confuses me since the map concept is larger than the original bespin.
Overall, great job placid.thc for mapping, *BS*Paddy for great sound editing.
Thanks jk2files.com for hosting the map.

 #9 - Scratch? - Posted by: lauser (Member) on 03-25-2005 at 05:59
Some nice ideas Paddy but it's definately NOT from scratch. Some of it maybe but not all of it. How do I know? I map too and I can see subtle tell tale signs that there are copied pieces. It's not a bad thing...just don't say it's all built from scratch is all.

Better lighting for the next version?

#10 - Posted by: Placid (Member) on 03-29-2005 at 02:08
It was all made from scratch, lauser. Took me a good 6 months to get as far as I have.

What do you think I did? Copied the old bespin and stretched it? Certainly not.

#5 is right, 2 bad you didnt ook your time to look for the best features or write 'bout them, this is a great map
