Hologram Room - File Description

I’m sure most people who have seen even only a bit of Star Trek wish there really were such things as 'holodecks', places to create a virtual world to enjoy, interact with, or live in... poor old Barclay!

Whether any such technology exists in Star Wars, I have no idea, but here we have something similar for JKA. Basically this is a map which allows you to load any of the Base JKA FFA maps by using one of the selector buttons or a random map by pressing the question mark button, thus in effect acting as a kind of 'holodeck'.

The explanation of how this works is really quite simple; JKA simply switches maps to the one that you selected, no mapping wizardry or science fiction hocus pocus here I’m afraid! It would be cool if you could actually 'generate' a map within another 'holodeck' style map, but whilst you can do something like that on a very small scale, to my knowledge nothing on the size of an actual map can be done using mapping methods.

The map itself is simple but looks pretty cool, with a grid pattern on the walls, very much like a holodeck, there are plenty of nice glowy bits and a nice little image which displays the map you are about to load. Though I have to say that I don’t think the light texture around the rim of the ceiling doesn’t fit that well with the texture scheme of the rest of the map.

All in all a clever little map here, as the author explains in his readme, the idea behind this map is thus:

The idea of this is that if you create a map rotation that, for instance, switches to the hologram room every hour regular players could use it to change to a map, then after an hour they would go back to the hologram room and could choose another.

So, if that sounds like a good idea for your server, then be sure to give it a download and give it a go! smile

FILENAME: hologram_room.pk3
DATE RELEASED: 30 January 2011

CREDITS: This mod was made by me. I used some files from the base jka files but the rest is all mine!

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS**: Take the PK3 and stick it in yer base folder!

This map is meant to be a hologram room, it basically functions as a map selector. You use the "select program" button to select any of the base ffa maps or the question mark for a random map then hit the "initialise program" button and it will begin counting down from zero. When the timer hits zero the map which is currently selected will be loaded.

The idea of this is that if you create a map rotation that, for instance, switches to the hologram room every hour regular players could use it to change to a map, then after an hour they would go back to the hologram room and could choose another.

BUGS: None that i know of.

COMMENTS: I know it says beta when loading I made this map years ago and never got round to releasing it till now so i have no idea where the source is for it!

Typo in title and pictures aren't working here as well as the POTD area. Curiouser and curiouser.

Regardless - very clever mod big grin

It's being worked on. stick out tongue

At the moment, seems like it's either the same bug causing the potd to disappear or a bug where screenshots don't display for a few hours after a mod gets reviewed (?).

Either way, Nozy reported the potd issue, so yeah, there's not much more Nozy or myself can do about it. 'Tis being worked on. stick out tongue

Although it's a shame we can't see the screenies, this sounds like a great little map, and definitely one of the most original in the last few months.

Yeah, I think it was because of that one update. Maybe the JK4 thing isn't an april fools joke after all.

Oh god, here we go again...

It's a technical issue on the [s]File[/s]GameFront network. The JK4 thing is a mod for Jedi Academy. No official sequel to Jedi Academy has been announced. It is a (genuine) fan made mod. Not a new game by Lucasarts, Raven, and what have you.

This is a great idea smile

Im not gonna complain about everyone else i download the files to review them stick out tongue

Well i think the idea however i worry that most servers will just vote for the map they want to go to or ask an admin to change it if voting is disabled. This must have had alot of mechanics going into it which is cool that the map wasnt based on looks! however the custom textures and shaders were pretty sweet, Personally reminded me of tron a lil bit stick out tongue I felt like i was getting sucked through time and space into that next map!

9/10 because it was original yet not sure if it was entirely useful

Thanks, im not sure how useful it would actually be I mostly did it as a technical exercise then tried to think of a way that it could actually be useful. The next step would be to modify the base FFA BSP files to add portals in them that go back to the hologram room map, in that way you could link all the FFA maps together, though I imagine it could be quite annoying big grin

^ It wouldn't be annoying, in fact it would work perfectly fine, but because of the lame engine, our computers would drop down to their knees, begging for mercy, only to be annihilated by chaotically unoptimized code.

the map itself isn´t very well made, don´t forget to use caulk everywhere you can´t see a brushskin ingame
but the idea is really nice
