| Duel Dustball - File Description |
 |
Description: Y'know, I'm starting to consider dueling more in JA - if only for the wonderful duel maps that come out. It seems there are many more quality duel maps than FFA for the game. Here is more proof of that.
Duel Dustball is an amazing duel map that meets almost every expectation I would have in a map made by Raven! But this one is made by Gonk. The design is wonderful, the lighting is lovely, the textures are perfect - the detail is incredible. The buildings in the background are great because you know when some people use a skybox and you get like, I dunno what to call it, but you see seam-like things? It just can make the whole map look ugly. But this map is secure all around by all of the buildings and you see nothing but blue skies and white wispy clouds. Some of the props that most people would leave out of a duel map are included here and really add to the ambience of this map. And my FPS didn't dive, so that's a plus.
The only thing this map is really missing is new music. That would really, really complete this duel map. While some may find it awkward dueling on the ship - I like it. It's not just a boring circle of sand in the middle like an arena. You feel like you're actually dueling somewhere, y'know? Great work, Gonk - I can't wait to see more. I'd love to see you do an FFA map!

Comments:
The performance on this one is not exactly up to par. Lots of detail, lots of patchwork, all in a small area. I did what I could but I'm not sure how well it'll hold up on older systems... Didn't get too many complaints about that in the beta..

Simply place duel_dustball.pk3 in your base folder. That's it!
=============================
Credits and thanks:
-All of the custom textures (i.e., most of the textures in the level) were made by Zuljin. Zully = win.
-The botrouting was done by Captain America, so special thanks to him, as I suck horribly at them... ;)
-The #cantina_cloud for giving me a reason to slack off.
-All my beta testers at the Massassi, Quake 3 World LE, and Map-Center forums, you know who you are!
-ydnar and all the people at the Quake 3 World LE forum and the Splash Damage Q3Map2 support forum for much help with shader oddities. (Also many thanks to ydnar for the super happy awesome q3map2.)
-The whole GTKRadiant crew for saving us from the horrors of crash-happy qeradiant.
-All my beta testers. (Jon`C, fourwood, p3, zully, etc. you know who you are! :))
-Raven for Jedi Academy.
-George Lucas for Star Wars.

I agree Wade that duel maps ask for and need high detail - although sometimes just that little something works also, but I like tatooine maps anyway so I think this is great work Gonk.
I thought that the sun shades around the arena were cool with a nice shader texture showing the cloth holes, I felt that maybe one or two should have been damaged or hangin slightly different just to add that bit more realism, but I still like them like they are.
The buildings around the arena are really very in style with what we have seen in the movies but more city like.
The lighting is also really good Its sometimes hard to work out whats best for desert maps as its full on sunshine, so a little colour to the worldspawn helps.
Love it great work
