Dragon's Claw Hilt Pack - File Description

Description:
Now this is an interest couple of hilts. I like new and innovative hilts. This certainly isn't the first dragon-themed hilt to grace the net, but it's not a copy of anything, either. I've always found dragons inspiring, both for myself and obviously for other people, as the concept of these creatures has spawned some of the most unique and interest mod pieces available. This is no exception.

For a first released hilt, this is quite good. It's very poly efficient, keeping its edges and polies as minimal as possible while still retaining the desired look. There are really no wasted edges here, which is unusual and refreshing. Plus the design itself is very interesting. The hilt itself is quite boring, being what looks like a simple slab of wood or metal... or something. The intriguing portion is the dragon wrapped around the hilt, masquerading as the main part of the hilt but not actually part of it at all. The tail flips off to the side, and the wings point up, giving the impression of a hilt guard. The face and tail point the same direction, making themselves book-ends for the hands gripping the hilt.

Texturing on this hilt is great. Like, really awesomely great, especially given how low-poly it is. The dragon especially looks exactly how it's supposed to. It's just a shame that such texture work is going to go mostly unseen, as hilts are not really seen close-up during lightsaber duels. I suppose for the sake of balance I should say something critical of this hilt. Lessee... ah yes, the eyes. They're supposed to glow, I gather. Alas, no glow shader. But Iny to the rescue!

Just make a glow texture (black with only the glowing eye) and you're set. I think, instead of simply trying to texture the effect, it will really enhance it. Overall, though, a great couple of hilts we have here. Definitely worth checking out!

CREDITS: Thanks to everyone who has written tutorials on creating mods for JA, i've read too many to list here! In the case of this project, most thanks go to Virtue for the "Lightsaber crafting 101" tutorial at http://www.thejediacademy.net/~virtue/tutorials/hilts/saber_tutorial.html

INSTALLATION: copy the included file "dragonclaw_hilts.pk3" into your jedi academy base folder, e.g. "C:/Program Files/Lucasarts/Jedi Academy/gamedata/base"

DESCRIPTION: The first mod i have finished and released, i have heaps of incomplete projects on my hard disk, so i decided to finish one for a change :P. Here we have two versions of a lightsaber hilt i designed, a dark one called Wyrmclaw and a light one called Ormrclaw. The model is based on a dragon, i wanted something that could really stand out among other saber hilts and i think the wings do a great job of it, see for yourself :). This was modelled and UVW mapped with gmax and textured with Photoshop.

BUGS: None known, please email me if you find any!

COMMENTS: This is a very basic job, only works in MP and has no shaders (I just couldn't seem to understand any of the few tutorials and help files i could find about shaders) but i think it came out fairly well anyway. However, if you know of any good tutorials about shaders or SP sabers, please email a link to me so i might make an improved version 2!!
Even if you don't know any i'd appreciate feedback as this is my first release, but please don't use my email for this! Please leave comments online on the download page where you found the file.

people always get around to releasing stuff before me. I was makin something like this, but its a sword, and not a lightsaber.

Just wondering, which version of GMAX would you guys think is best? I'm using 1.2, but it's kinda hard.
