| [CONTEST] The Bath House - File Description |
 |
Description: This map was submitted for the Jan-Feb 2007 Mapping Contest. To see the winners, check our Contest Archives.
Note: Due to some crediting issues, this map was considered a late entry, and as such was disqualified from competing for a finalist position. All errors have since been corrected.
This map, submitted for the intermediate category, brings us a style and theme which we don't see very often (but rightfully should). It is styled as a bath house. For those of you who are too Generation Y to know what a bath is... Ha, just kidding. I hope you all know what baths are. Back in the days of yore, there was no running water. Gasp! I know. So they used baths. Often times public bathing structures: bath houses. I foresee an "eww, gross!" coming up at some point, but hey... it was a different time. In any case, this particular bath house must have been for the upper classes, as it is thick with marble, elegant arches and curves, and some very elegant stair cases.
I just love the look of this map. Of the submissions, it could very well be my favorite, although this is probably just due to its unique subject matter. The brushwork in this particular map is very well done and quite varied, including both curves and hard edges. I also felt it interesting that the author chose to use unfitting models, such as some of the statues and hanging torches from Korriban, and yet despite this obvious clash they seem to fit in perfectly well.
Texture usage is also good. The plain marble walls are broken up a bit more than midway up with a strip of what looks like engraving, and the blue makes for a good contrast with the white. The one texture-related thing that bothers me is the Quake flags. Quake flags? Really. The map isn't even available for CTF as far as I can tell, so I'm unsure as to the purpose of these banners, being as how this is definitely not one of the Quake games. The only other qualm I had was the lighting. It looks cool, but to a trained eye it defies the laws of physics. Something to consider for the future.
Overall a wonderful map. Hopefully this author will participate in future contests as well!

COMMENTS: The Bath House is a duel map made for the JKFiles mapping contest of February 2007. It is designed after a Roman bath house. This map could also be used for power duels and small ffa/tffa matches.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: To install the map, unzip the file and place the bath_house.pk3 file in your base folder. To uninstall, just remove the pk3 file from your base folder.
CREDITS: I would like to thank my fellow clan mates for giving me many great ideas for this contest and also for testing out the map before it was submitted to the contest.
Some textures came from the PhotoRealistic Texture Pack by BerneyBoy (http://berneyboy.planetquake.gamespy.com/textures.htm).
The banners came from a compilation file from an old contest at Map-Center. I specifically used banners by Gizmo and Megaman and they deserve all credit for the texture and shader creation of the bannners.
I would also like to acknowledge the staff and members at Map Craft (www.map-craft.com) for having such an extensive tutorial site (including tutorial and download for the spiral staircase by Myth) and an active forum where I continue to learn about mapping for JKA.
The textures in the fsa_council and bath_house folders were created by me. You are free to borrow them, I only ask that you acknowledge where they came from if you do use them.
BUGS: There are no known bugs.

Nice, I like this map. With all the cool shadows and stuff.
It's too bad this and that other cafe map couldn't be submitted for the contest... These maps are really interesting and different, the kinda maps I like. And they look really cool, I would say they probably could've been submitted to the expert category (and had a good shot at winning). It's too bad they didn't though I would have voted for one of them
10/10
wow looks like padme's apartment from ep III, it could be her bath room
JKFiles gave me plenty of time to correct the errors before the judging began, but I was on vacation without my computer and didn't get the message they sent asking me to fix the errors until after the judging had started. It was just one of those things that happens. It was a great contest though and I hope they have more mapping contests in the future.
ohh thats looking pretty
